International Women's Day 2019 #BalanceForBetter

Gender parity is not just good for women — it’s good for societies,” - Angelica Fuentes

Genuinely one of my favourite celebrations of the year, International Women’s Day (IWD) is a day everyone takes a moment to appreciate the women near and far for all the incredible qualities that make them the nurturing, resilient, empathetic and overall divine beings they truly are!

International Women’s Day was introduced in 1911, initially supported by millions of people in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland, it is now celebrated all over the world. The theme of IWD 2019 is #BalanceforBetter. The campaign notes that:

From grassroots activism to worldwide action, we are entering an exciting period of history where the world expects balance. Gender balance is essential for economies and communities to thrive...

We notice its absence and celebrate its presence...

Balance drives a better working world. Let's all help create a #BalanceforBetter.

The common understanding of gender inequality has been recognised by Global Vision International (GVI) as a long list of statistics showing the imbalance of power between men and women. But in real terms, gender inequality is a major problem on local, national and global levels. It is an intersectional issue.

GVI has found that inequality not only affects the lives of individual men and women, but the inequality between genders stunts economic growth and consequently hinders development in almost every level. Gloria Steinem noted that:

Nothing changes the gender equation more significantly than women's economic freedom,”

The International Women’s Day campaign supports the argument that gender balance is not simply a women’s issue, but emphasises that it is an economic issue. The UN found that increasing women’s and girls’ educational attainment contributes to women’s economic empowerment and more inclusive economic growth. Women’s inclusivity accounts for 50% of the economic growth in OECD countries over the last 50 years!

So let us continue to invest in our women.

Let us listen to our women.

Let us protect our women.

Let us take care of them.

For that is what they do for us, every single day.
