StyleLikeU: The Mother-Daughter Duo Helping Build The Movement Of Radical Self Love and Acceptance
“BY CREATING A SPACE ON THE INTERNET FOR DIVERSE INDIVIDUALS TO EXPRESS THEMSELVES AND THEIR STYLE FREELY, STYLELIKEU HAS SPARKED A MOVEMENT FOR ACCEPTANCE, REGARDLESS OF AGE, RACE, BODY-TYPE, GENDER SEXUALITY, OR ABILITY.”
Founded by mother Elisa Goodkind and daughter Lily Mandelbaum, the duo describe StyleLikeU as a multimedia platform for radically honest docu-style content that gives voice to diverse role models who stand proudly outside of norms and are comfortable in their skin.
I first discovered StyleLikeU through a Youtube binge and found their amazing series “The What’s Underneath Project”. It was through this mini-series I was introduced to so many amazing individuals like Naomi Shimada and Frederique Harrel discussing topics of love, loss, race and self-acceptance. Through these unravellings these ladies have acted as “real” influencers not just on my social media life, but in my everyday life too. Elisa and Lily do a superb job at connecting with their subjects subsequently allowing viewers to feel this connection too.
Their goal is to dispel the toxic, unrealistic perceptions of beauty not just within the industry but within oneself. They celebrate non-conformity and do so by exploring our relationships with clothes, beauty and most importantly style. This is then related to how one views themselves and how they feel they are viewed by others. Elisa and Lily provide the means for their volunteers to lead the episode by introducing a few prompts of personal questions and existential ponderings. But it is not just through this conversation the individual is having with Elisa and Lily, but with themselves, that you are completely immersed in the experience of someone’s self discovery and healing in one mere encounter. It is honestly magical.
From the moment we are born, the fashion and beauty marketing machine saturates us with monolithic and unattainable notions of beauty and fashion. Obsessed with youth, meaningless consumption, photoshopped “perfection,” and celebrity-worship, we have been brainwashed to hate our bodies, dread aging, yearn for fame over integrity, and spend our lives paralyzed by a desire to fit in.
We created StyleLikeU as alternative to this unconscious self-hate. Home to a series of radically honest docu-style video portraits that redefine our culture’s notion of beauty, each piece of our content is driving public engagement around the reversal of the fashion and beauty industry’s crippling status quo.
By featuring the diverse stories of unapologetic individuals who are true to themselves and comfortable in their skin, you will be empowered to discover that same sense of freedom and comfort in your own skin.
