THE RED TENT
I LOVED this book and have reread it at least 3 times in the past 20 years.
The book's title refers to the tent in which women of Jacob's tribe must, according to the ancient law, take refuge while menstruating or giving birth, and in which they find mutual support and encouragement from their mothers, sisters and aunts. It celebrates mothers and daughters and the mysteries of the female life cycle.
This first-person narrative tells the story of the biblical character Dinah daughter of Jacob and sister of Joseph.
Although Dinah is a minor character in the bible the author has beautifully broadened her story into a highly readable tale of the blessing and curse that is historically and currently womanhood.
