VERVE BOOK CLUB
Um…… We fucked up….. It happens….
We were so looking forward to reading WE: A Manifesto for Women Everywhere but a few pages in we all agreed that this isn’t the book for VERVE.
First of all it is in NO way a manifesto.
Secondly, it reeks of white cisgender privilege and is essentially a self-help book on how to feel better about ourselves and our issues through meditation, aromatic baths and mani-pedi’s.
It’s NOT that we object to any of these luxurious personal indulgences in fact some of us are huge fans… It’s that there is nothing to be learned from this book that can’t be found somewhere else.
Therefore we’ve gone ahead and chosen a new book.
Americanah is a hell of a story and gold mine of insight into what it’s like to be a young Nigerian woman studying in America.
So slip off your shoes, unhook your bra and let Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
(one of VERVE’s favorite feminists) take you on an extraordinary ride.
