Volunteering Is Selfish.... What The Fuck Are You Waiting For?
I’m not gonna preach, but…….
I’m a big fan of irony but I don’t think the high we get from helping others is ironic. I think it’s. Duh.
There is no such thing as volunteering for the “wrong” reasons. Our self serving intentions don’t negate the help we give.
People, organizations, children, animals and the elderly don’t give a fuck about “why” you volunteer. Do it to find a boyfriend/girlfriend. Do it because potential employers love it.
Do it to help manage your depression and anxiety. Do it because it makes you feel special. Do it for the praise.
Do it because you’ve moved to a new town and wanna make some like minded friends. Do it because you like the free t-shirts. Do it for the photos you’ll post later to instagram. Do it because you will live a longer happier life. Do it out of boredom.
Still reluctant? Let’s see what the “they” say:
Volunteering time makes you feel like you have more time.
People who donate to charity feel wealthier.
Volunteering can help you earn your next job.
Volunteering your love makes you feel more love.
Volunteering builds empathy, strengthens social bonds and makes you smile — all factors that increase the feeling of love.
Skilled volunteer work — such as helping a nonprofit with its finances — makes job applicants look more appealing to a hiring manager.
Volunteering alongside other members of your family strengthens family bonds based because you are living your values.
Children who volunteer with their parents are more likely to become adults who volunteer. It’s called the ripple effect.
Volunteering increases trust in others, and increased social and political participation.
Volunteering is the truest and funnest way of “paying it forward”.
I’ve tried all kinds of “highs” and the “helper high” beats them all. The only hangover is the addiction that will drive you to want to do it again and again……
So If you dig cats rescue one, but no more than 5, ‘cause that’s just weird.
